On 2017-04-13 in Amersham I was hit by (or I hit) a BMW travelling in the opposite direction that turned across in front of me. The driver said that she didn't see me. After smashing in her windscreen with my shoulder I ended up sitting on the roof of the car feeling a bit puzzled. Luckily she pulled over at that point and I was able to slide down off the roof and walk over to the grass verge to sit down. A couple of passers by were very helpful and the paramedic was on the scene in less than five minutes - great service! The police and an ambulance were not far behind and I was treated very well by them all. After a few hours in A&E at the hospital (including CT scan, etc.) I was pronounced fit to leave and my son drove me home. My collarbone is smashed, along with some cracked ribs, bumps and bruises. Quite a bit of me is now a fetching shade of yellow. At the scene of the accident I had the presence of mind to get someone to pause my Garmin, so at least I'll have an accurate record of the ride. There was also a camera on the bike, which the police tell me captured the accident very well. Sadly my bike is a write off - the downtube was creased by the force of the impact. Apparently the car is also likely to be a write off, as the impression I made in the strut above the windscreen can't be fixed. Overall I'm well - things could have been much worse. I didn't bang my head particularly hard and I was wearing a helmet. Selection of a replacement bike is underway. On 2017-05-05 I had surgery on the shoulder to install a plate and some artificial tendons. A couple of months physio to come! I'm back working, though even slower than usual due to being able to type only with my left hand. If you need something please don't hesitate to hassle me a bit - I have a list of pre-prepared excuses to paste into my replies.
